Ceramic Matrix Composites: Current Status and Perspectives
Walter Krenkel,
Ceramic Materials Engineering
University of Bayreuth, Germany
The biggest barrier in the extensive use of ceramics is their inherent brittleness and the lack of damage tolerance of ceramic structures. Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) show considerably higher fracture toughness and have proven their feasibility in space and frictional applications like thermal protection systems (TPS) and brake disks. These safety-critical components have to withstand harsh conditions in terms of temperature and corrosion only for short times, accumulated to some hours. Increasing interest in CMCs arise in long-term applications like components for the combustion environment. Oxide as well as non-oxide CMCs are under development to be used for example in future thermal power plants. Liquid phase routes like polymer infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP), melt infiltration (MI) and slurry impregnation or combinations thereof are promising manufacture routes to overcome the still high processing costs. Different approaches are on the way to develop new CMC processes on the basis of prepregs and preforms with chopped or continuous oxide and non-oxide fibers. Reports are given about the current status of oxide and non-oxide composites and their perspectives
