Department of Civil Engineering Materials The Department of Civil Engineering Materials was originated from the Concrete Laboratory of Civil Engineering Department of Central University in 1947. Professor Zhongwei Wu, the founder of the lab, was an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The Department of Civil Engineering Materials used to be the Teaching & Researching Unit specialized in building materials affiliated to Civil Engineering Department of Southeast University. In 1955, it was authorized to offer the bachelors program in building materials, the first one among universities in China in this area. In 2012, it changed its official name to the Department of Civil Engineering Materials in School of Materials Science and Engineering. The current research area includes:high performance structural materials, new chemical admixtures, environmental building materials, etc. The Department of Civil Engineering Materials has 14 full Professors, 7 Associate Professors and 9 lectures/engineers, among whom there are 2 academicians of the China Academy of Engineering, 1 honored professor of Yangtze River Scholar granted by the Ministry of Education, 2 recipients of National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, 3 cross-century talents granted by the Ministry of Education, 1 talent of the first and 2 of the second level of Jiangsu Province 333 Engineering Program respectively. More than 90% of the faculties have the PhD degrees. The Department of Civil Engineering Materials has a prominent network of alumni, including around 1600 bachelors, 350 masters and 150 doctorates so far. Most of them are now the key scientists or engineers in the field of civil engineering. The Department of Civil Engineering Materials is constructive on the research platforms. It owns the Joint International Laboratory for Advanced Construction Materials (LACM), the Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center for Advanced Civil Engineering Materials, the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Construction Materials, the Jiangsu Modern Concrete Durability Assessment and Enhancement Technology Center, the Jiangsu Dongda Engineering Quality Inspection Center and so on. In recent years, led by the two academicians (Professor Wei Sun and Professors Changwen Miao), the Department of Civil Engineering Materials has implemented hundreds of international-, state- and province-level projects as the principal institution, including National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program), National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), National Key Technologies R&D programs named “Eleventh Five-Year Plan”, “Twelfth Five-Year Plan”, and “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan”, National Natural Science Foundation of China granted research projects, Military granted projects, Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Communications granted projects. The Department of Civil Engineering Materials aims at the combination of basic studies and engineering practices, which has been applied in important national projects such as Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, ShenZhen-ZhongShan Bridge, Three Gorges Dam, Beijing-Shanghai Express Railway, Tianwan Nuclear Power Station, South Sea Islands Construction. Owing to its significant scientific and technical contributions, it has been granted three National Science and Technology Progress Second Prizes, one National Invention Second Prize, and six Provincial Science and Technology Progress First Prizes. The Department of Civil Engineering Materials keeps good contacts with worldwide counterparts in terms of extensive academic exchange and scientific collaborations, including Delft University of Technology, Tokyo University, Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, The University of British Columbia, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and so on. It frequently organizes international and national conferences, and meanwhile invites famous professors to give short-term lectures on specific topics. |
